"It is as if someone else was writing and using me to express themselves"

Gill Houghton was born and raised in East London and is proud to be called a Londoner. She now lives Just outside London in Essex with her husband and daughter. Still working in London, in the world of Finance (since leaving school at 16)  means much of her writing takes place on her commute to and from work.

Soapbox is what I call ‘People’s Poetry’, aimed at those that would not normally read Poetry let alone purchase a Poetry book.

Soapsuds is the follow on collection of poetry of Soapbox. The journey so far has been amazing. Those that would not normally read poetry have read and embraced it. Having touched so many people I can only but continue on.

I started writing Poetry at a time in my life when my hormones were all over the place, mainly due to the drugs I was given whilst having IVF treatment. Although the treatment didn’t work it sparked something inside me that inspired me to write.

I started to write about those closest to me, soon after I was challenged by my friends to write about them too. In person I am quite direct and if someone asks me for advice it’s because they actually want to know my opinion, which is not always complimentary. But as friends they know my advice is wrapped in love and at times, frustration.

The whole writing experience was sometimes quite scary as I would sit on the Central line with a pen and paper writing feverishly. I wasn’t always aware of what I was writing until I stopped and read through what was on the paper.

It is as if someone else was writing and using me to express themselves.

As my confidence grew I experimented with new ideas including song writing. It’s great to hear my verse come to life in the form of a song.

Throughout the course of the day I wear many different hats and, although I often write whilst wearing my own shoes my writing lets me experience life in other peoples.
